this article caught my eye for a couple reasons:

-picture of talking heads album
-i thought article author richard metzger was bob pollard collaborator richard meltzer

anyway, it's a good article, and those SACD's are cool. i don't have an SACD player, but whatever. i don't have a blue-ray dvd or abdominal muscles either. but i have a fridge in my bedroom full of fancy sodas like rhubarb and lavender and lemongrass. i have kumquat, too. i wish someone would just make-bubbly and bottle watermelon juice.

My Last Supper

there are new pictures on my flickr page, but flickr is still spelled stupid. i want you all to know what i look like so you don't think i look like tyler florence.

there's nothing wrong with him. except that he looks more like a chili-eating parrot than he looks like me. Tyler Florence would eat fried chicken for his last meal, according to the cool book Allison got me for March Tenth. I will now answer the questions put to famous chefs in the book:

What would be your last meal on earth?
knowing my luck, it'll be a crummy sandwich or lame potatoes or something. If I could choose, I would have raw oysters (not too rainy, shucked myself, Crystal hot sauce, saltines), buffalo wings (sauce not broken, juicy/crispy, more flappy parts than drumettes, bleu cheese dressing), an awesome burger (med rare, dijon mustard, perfect tomato, crispy lettuce, poached egg, pickled jalapeno, crumbled potato chips[Ruffles], American cheese, puffy bun with no sesame seeds grilled on the flattop with clarified butter), Dad's BBQ chicken wings, Barnaby's pizza (sausage & mushroom, made by the tall dude not the fat guy) & mexican chocolate & fresh macaroons (no less than 2 minutes old) for dessert. If we could get some Waffle House hashbrowns to absorb what ever drips off the wings and burger that would be great. and plenty of nigiri, especially scallop. and a caja china pig. and risotto with like a whole tin of saffron in it. and pan bagnat the way Jaques Pepin & Julia Child made it. and fiddle heads. and artichokes the way mom used to do them. if i still have room i would like a chili dog with cole slaw and fresh crazy fruits like lychees.

what would be the setting for the meal?
we would enjoy the first couple courses al fresco at Kleeman Plaza, then head into the left side of Barnabys and spread out across two tables.

what would you drink with your meal?
I would like to have some cold Abita Amber with my oysters & wings. burgandy with the burger (from some vineyard & vintage i could never afford) & some heavy duty italian red with the pizza. plenty of dry champagne before and after each course, and pitchers of Arnold Palmer. ice cold 2% milk with the macaroons.

would there be music?
we'll have Emily put together a good shuff, and then roll ourselves to the GbV reunion show at the old Cow Haus after dinner. no TV.

who would be your dining companions?
with friends like mine, who needs dead philosophers and famous people? Adlai Stevenson would be cool, though. and Princess Grace Kelly. That would probably be what killed me, watching Grace Kelly eat chicken wings. or maybe the chicken wings themselves.

who would prepare the meal?
not me! i'll make the bleu cheese dressing and sabre the champagne but thats it.

the tomb of the unnamed sock(sp? i mean, sic.)

arlington national laundry room. it's real.

i was invited to an orgy tonight. respectfully declined. my newspaper-man-nose-for-a-story was bout it. croquet at kleeman plaza has taken a bizzare turn. and them sysco girls are just as crazy as i always thought. "James, dude! DoubleYouTeeEff?!" Me: No dudes, it's cool. i guess. your shot, Reverend.

word on the street is "who let the dogs out, james?" i would answer that question with a question: Me: why you gotta be bringing up old shit?

fed dinner to the mayor of st. george island last night. i fear i may have over-cooked his excellencie's filet, but what'serface (of the east point Serfaces, old bean) enjoyed her quotation fingers deconstructed fried rice very much. also, i stole a pint glass from blackbeard. now i'm the captain of the bluegrass and i'm turning into a barnacle and the sea goddess is going to turn all the cars into robots and John McLaine(sp?) is too busy saving the world from scary children to stop the evil corporation from enslaving the developing world under the leadership of the liberated Karl Rove! also, it's time for more meteor showers, you know? whatever happened to those?

Detective Scotch Poster is working a new case, faithful. i'm messing with the dj on v89. i told him that we needed massive doses of GBV and some rolling fucking stones, STAT! he thought STAT was a band. but he played three tracks of bee thousand and the live midnight rambler that i like so don't make fun of him b/c he has a dorky voice. i like ian. we're cool. and so are we.

< stillgoofybutserious>i moved my sailboat into a slip. fixed the pump deal. sailor Mike "appreciates shades of brown" and is helping me tellyouwhatdo. in apalach, the weirdos look like zombies and the normal people look like weirdos. on land i have new digs, also. the meth lab got packed up and now i'm in the sea-foam home. can't wait to show you ladies the meteor shower< /sgbs ="kick his ass, sgbs!">

my clothes are clean and almost dry, so i bid you'all a fair good-bye; if ever you wonder where went the hounds, rest assured that blame abounds; for however twas the beasts were released; ask not why, but by whom; and o'er the beats ye shall seek. who who? who? who who?

ploop commissioned everyone to chart out how to win an argument. i hope my flow chart is able to shed some light, for sure click through to the other submissions. insightful and delightful.

as you can see, i have set my diagram to music. that is why i'm hot. you may also notice that pleading/crying has a 50% chance of winning an argument.

in a related story, jessica and matt are getting married this weekend. after my last wedding performance, it seems only fitting that i be invited to repeat. mothers, lock up your bridesmaids bottles of wine and golf carts.

what a day that was

where to begin? ate a sandwich at sonny's w/ dad. alone enough to warrant a post. have i told you about smokedpork/coleslaw/garlicbread/bbqsauce at sonny's? now i have! go get you some!
thought i lost my phone. turns out that wasn't true, i just left it over shalley drive way by mom's pc. i turned it off so dad & i could watch the preview for the new wallace & gromit movie in peace.
then it was time for work. a good day at work. short and painless. plus i knew the whole time that when i got home the entire new bob pollard album would be ready for me. that's right. i now have a complete copy of "from a compound eye." i have only soulseek and it's various gbv savvy users to thank. there are those who would keep this treasure from me, and they now sulk defeated. there was seriously a thread on the gbv board about not letting this record get onto any p2p networks. give me a break quick-snap! i've been downloading everything bob pollard so much as looks at funny for the past four years. doesn't stop me from rushing over to vinyl feves or luna music or wtf i have to do to buy a legit copy of the monthly masterwork. shit, i did the figures a few days ago, and i forget what they are, but i've spent over $500 on guided by voices et al. and that's not counting beers at concerts. this is my guy, guys, robert pollard is love. may he stomp beer cans on the souls of the un-converted and light cigarettes made of platinum with well deserved twenties 'til steve jobs enslaves us all with ipod earbud nooses. anyway, let me know if you want to hear the new album, and you do.
also, the drive-by-truckers played tally tonight. i got to the cowhausbeta bar just as they finished their first song. great show. didn't play 'nine bullets.' whatever. a good time was had by all five koolbeanz employees in attendance.
did i mention that there is a vicious rumor dave taylor is in town? can anyone say "threedayweekend" with as much enthusiasm as i can? last week we had erik, now we got dave. tallahassee is the center of the universe, go noles!

GBV Eulogy

nude as the news wrote a very cool pice w/ links to lots of good gbv stuff. they are missing some serious jams on the top 100 list they made, but there are many more than 100 great GBV songs, so they're okay.

"fuck spongebob! I don't write music for cartoons! I write music for reality. and I'm sick of reality!" -Bob Pollard

so monday night i saw gbv for the last time. erik, elizabetty and i drove down to orlando for the night. didn't bring a camera, so there is no proof that I shook hands w/ Bob before the concert. You can just take that on faith.

sold my extra two tickets to some cool dudes in the line. also i have to say hello to pat, juan and jessica, who are some cool v89 people that were in line with me. hello also to the tall dude w/ dreads who was hanging out w/ me and erik on the floor. sorry we couldn't make it to the pita pit. and thanks to the stage right bartender.

of course the biggest thanks have to go to the one and only JOE COCHE! that's right people, ole' joe is still workin' for the mouse and let us crash at his house. fans of joe will be happy to hear the guy is doing real well. an all'at fun stuff.

so a good time was had by all. the band played a good dose of my favorite music of all time, i got to spend plenty of quality car-time with two of my favorite people of all time, and now i have to go back to work.

post number 317

gbv tickets for the athens and carrboro shows are sold out. i didn't get any. i was so upset i stayed up all night watching hard day's night and eating army raviolis. i'm better now. today i locked down a fistfull of tickets for the show in orlando. who's coming with me?

i don't usually put pictures of famous people as the main picture, but that one of britney spears is really funny. what is she wigging out about? did erik tell her that dave quit his band? did mattman show her pictures of pensacola? did someone play her a song off of one of her albums?

been closed and locked up for far too long

a really good guided by voices song (of which there are many) can get me motivated to do just about anything. even update my webpage? question mark? period? lower my interest rates ygh4xer?

last night i had a suprise birthday party thrown in my honor. i was only slightly decieved by the half-clever sneak party attack. i was, however heartily pleased by the volume and quality of the turn-out. also there was a man who knew too little-esque scavanger hunt that had me capturing renegade linguist noam chomsky by following the trail of clues mike judge and my sister had laid out for me across the tally metro. presents include (but are not restricted to):

savory guitar stand with poseable guitar string attachment - mattamattic teller mattchine

photo collage of NECI students terrorizing sleepy montpeculiar - danger!elizadeath rae!

photo collage of son and daughter ponder NOT riding escalators - artist currently known as emilius

digital video of the fabulous mick jagger speaking w/ fake irish accent - googlius gabelio of the googliatzzi

i bought myself some new shoes, and of course, the new gbv album. both are kickin'. get it?

Scotch Poster is hot on the trail of some stolen paintings in the new adventure "The Olympic Blanchir." This story will hopefully be the first of many shorter adventures i will spew forth before "Paste of Thieves" is completed. I'll post it this weekend sometime.

i made a table out of clay

the final guided by voices album cover:

letter to bob

dude, it's your call. i'm sad that there won't be any more of my favorite concerts, but i trust you will continue to write cool songs and let me hear them. which reminds me, thanks for all of the cool songs. i consider under the bushes to be the greatest gift the state of ohio has ever bestowed upon me. way better than airplanes. i'm sure i'll be seeing you sometime before the end of the year, but if i get drafted or some shit and don't get to make it to at least one more show, let me just take this opportunity to say good luck with whatever's next, and if you ever need anything you can count on me. long live rockathon.

GBVDB - Guided By Voices Database
just in time! i feel a huge gbv relapse comin on hard. frankly, i think my own gbv catalog intimidated me. i was backing up all my gbv albums to cd when i realized i owned over 20 albums by guided by voices. and my stash is by no means complete. now, thanks to the gbvdb i have a reference for filling out my collection.

also, i shook hands with gov. howard dean today for the second time in one year. can you smell what the doc is cookin!

gbv finally made a good music video, and it's a really good one. just in time, too. three days and everyone will be able to buy a copy of Earthquake Glue, allow it to grow on them as it has grown on me and then we can all dance like Beatle Bob at an upcoming Guided by Voices concert.
